SSS Women’s Championships 2019

On Saturday the 9th of November, Glasgow’s Women’s team joined 4 others at Clyde Cruising Club Dinghy Section at Bardowie for a weekend of racing. The teams were competing in the Scottish Student Sailing Women’s Championships 2019, hosted by Strathclyde Sailing Club. Glasgow’s team was aptly named ‘Galsgow’ and the other competitors included the Strath Sirens, EdinBRA, No Buoys Allowed and Knotty but Nice.

The first races started bright and early in light wind and chilly conditions. Team Galsgow were quick to the start lines but often struggled to get around the first mark in a stable combination. It was a good opportunity to try out newly learned tactics such as Smackdown’s which were carried out with variable success! With lots of fun on the pontoon and increasingly light winds the sailing came to an end at 3pm with Galsgow coming in 5th.

The teams headed out to Saturday’s social to ceilidh the night away at Drygate Brewery in Glasgow. The band were brilliant and had everyone dancing to the classics before everyone headed to the city centre to continue the fun.

A very still loch with no wind on Sunday morning brought the sailing to an early end. The results after 20 races were EdinBRA in first (Edinburgh University Sailing Club) with 87.5% wins, No Buoys Allowed (University of St Andrews Sailing Club) in second with 87.5% wins, Strath Sirens (University of Strathclyde Sailing Club) in third with 50% wins, Knotty but Nice (Dundee University Sailing Club) in 4th with 12.5% wins leaving Galsgow (University of Glasgow Sailing Club) in 5th with 12.5%.
