Frequently Asked Questions (under maintenance)

  • What type of sailing can I get involved in at Glasgow University and what do you sail?
Dinghy Beginners - The beginners course is set up so that students who have no experience with sailing can gain an RYA level 1 and 2 beginners qualification. Beginners will be given sessions to improve their confidence on the water by RYA instructors. Usually sail Pico’s. Open Sailing - Freeform sailing for those who are confident enough to take a dinghy out without an instructor or coach. For those who just want a bit of extra practice. Usually sail Fireflies on Wednesday. Dinghy Team Racing - We have three teams, which train most Saturdays and compete on some weekends. These teams compete in National events throughout the year and though it is a big commitment it is well worth it for the fun. Sail Fireflies. Yachting Yachting Teams - We sail 707’s and Sonars throughout the year, competing in various different competitions and in various different locations.
  • What kit do I need to sail?
If you are just trying out sailing at our taster or trials session, warm, old clothes that you are willing to get wet, should do. If you join the club (bare in mind that we sail mostly in the winter months), we have some suggestions of kit below. There are items which are available in limited numbers which can be borrowed from Bardowie club (they have an asterix beside their names), however we do recommend purchasing your own for both ease and comfort. Wetsuit/Drysuit* SprayTop Wetshoes* SprayTop RashVest Sailing Gloves Bailer (can construct out of a milk carton) Hat Sailing Watch Thermals Protest Flag (Have a look in your Welcome Pack) Please understand that this is merely a list of suggested items, and that you may wish to remove or add items to your personal attire.
